Shinya Aoki vs Lyle Beerbohm On Tap for Strikeforce: Diaz vs Daley

MMA Weekly Reports:

Shinya Aoki

– 26-5-0 MMA/ 0-1 Strikeforce Record

– 3 Fight Win Streak

– Notable Wins: Mizuto Hirota, Joachim Hansen, Tatsuya Kawajiri

Lyle Beerbohm

– 15-1-0 MMA/ 5-1 Strikeforce Record

– 6 TKO, 7 Sub, 2 Decision

– Notable Wins: Duane Ludwig, Rafaello Oliveira, Vitor Riberio

Shinya Aoki returns to the United States for the second time, as he faces Lyle Beerbohm at Strikeforce: Diaz vs Daley. The event takes place on April 9th at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California. The card is already stacked with two title fights including Nick Diaz vs Paul Daley for the welterweight strap and Gilbert Melendez vs Tatsuya Kawajiri for the 155-pound belt.

Shinya Aoki looks to rebound from an embarrassing performance at DREAM’s New Year’s show, where he met Yuichiro Nagashima in an exhibition mixed-rules bout. The first round was just K-1 rules, favoring Nagashima heavily. Aoki made a fool out of himself by attempting multiple dropkicks until the time ran out. The second round was MMA rules which favored Aoki heavilly but when he dropped down for a takedown, Nagashima blasted him with a knee, knocking him unconscious in just four seconds into the round. Since losing to Gilbert Melendez in his Strikeforce debut, Aoki has won three-consecutive fights in Japan, including a first round submission win over title contender, Tatsuya Kawajiri.

Lyle Beerbohm suffered his first professional loss last month against Pat Healy at Strikeforce Challengers 14. The two engaged in one of the most exciting, hard-fought grappling matches ever seen inside the cage, but in the end it was Healy who won the unanimous decision from the judges. Previous to the Healy loss, Beerbohm was 5-0 under the Strikeforce banner and very close to title shot consideration.

Nick Diaz vs Paul Daley is Official for April 9th Strikeforce Event

MMA Junkie Reports:

Nick Diaz

– 24-7-0 MMA/ 5-0 Strikeforce Record

– 9 Fight Win Streak

– Notable Wins: Marius Zaromiskis, KJ Noons, Hayato Sakurai

Paul Daley

27-9-2 MMA/ 2-0 Strikeforce Record

– 4 Fight Win Streak

– Notable Wins: Dustin Hazelett, Martin Kampmann, Scott Smith

Strikeforce officials have confirmed that the two remaining heavyweight tournament quarterfinals have been pushed back to early summer, but will still have an event for April 9th. The rumors of a welterweight championship bout between Nick Diaz and Paul Daley has been officially booked. Strikeforce: Diaz vs Daley will be held at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California. A lightweight title fight between Gilbert Melendez and Tatsuya Kawajiri has also been signed for the co-main event.

Nick Diaz is quickly rising up the pound-for-pound rankings riding a nine-fight win streak, the longest of his career. He has competed in both the welterweight and middleweight division, disposing of everyone in his way. Diaz defeated Mariusz Zaromskis in January of 2010 with a first round TKO stoppage to become Strikeforce’s first welterweight champion. He has since defended the belt twice against KJ Noons and most recently Evangelista ‘Cyborg’ Santos.

Feared striker, Paul Daley gambled his title opportunity by taking a fight outside the promotion against Yuya Shirai at BAMMA 5 in the United Kingdom. Fortunately for both Daley and Strikeforce, he knocked out the current DEEP welterweight champion in less than two minutes. It was Daley’s fourth consecutive victory since being released by the UFC for sucker-punching Josh Koscheck after the final bell in May of last year.

MMA Junkie Reports:

Sarah Kaufman

– 12-1-0 MMA Record

– 9 TKO, 3 Decision Victories

– Notable Wins: Takayo Hashi, Miesha Tate, Roxanne Modafferi

Former Strikeforce 135-pound women’s champion Sarah Kaufman signs with the Canadian-based promotion, Armageddon Fighting Championships. She is scheduled to make her debut on April 2nd in her hometown of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada at Armageddon Fighting Championships 5, against an opponent to be named at a later date.

Kaufman is still under contract with Strikeforce, but the promotion is allowing her to compete elsewhere as they build up competitors for her in her weight class.

Sarah Kaufman began her career a perfect 12-0, and was considered to be one of the world’s top pound-for-pound female fighters in all of mixed martial arts. She became Strikeforce’s first ever women’s 135-pound champion following her unanimous decision victory over Takayo Hashi back in February of last year. In her next fight, Kaufman put women’s MMA on the map with her vicious knockout slam victory over Roxanne Modafferi on the Strikeforce Challengers 9 card. Unfortunately in her big show debut, she was upset by Marloes Coenen with a third round armbar last October.

Gilbert Melendez vs Tatsuya Kawajiri Expected for April 9th Strikeforce Event

MMA Junkie Reports:

Gilbert Melendez

– 18-2-0 MMA/ 8-1 Strikeforce Record

– 4 Fight Win Streak

– Notable Wins: Josh Thomson, Shinya Aoki, Mitsuhiro Ishida

Tatsuya Kawajiri

– 27-6-2 MMA/ Strikeforce Debut

– Won 5 of last 6 Fights

– Notable Wins: Kazunori Yakota, Gesias Cavalcante, Josh Thomson

Strikeforce has added a lightweight title fight between Gilbert Melendez and Tatsuya Kawajiri to their April 9th event. Although nothing is official, the event is likely to take place at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. A welterweight title fight between Nick Diaz and Paul Daley is also expected to take place at this event.

Melendez is considered by many to be the top “non-Zuffa” lightweight in all of mixed martial arts. He currently is on four-fight win streak, including avenging his two career losses against Josh Thomson and Mitsuhiro Ishida. In his most recent fight, Melendez dominated top Japanese lightweight Shinya Aoki at Strikeforce: Nashville in April of last year.

Tatsuya Kawajiri gets a shot a US gold, following a 6-2 record in the Japanese-based DREAM promotion. He was won five of his last six fights, including victories over Geisas Cavalcante, Kazunori Yokota and most recently dominated former Strikeforce champion, Josh Thomson at DREAM’s year-end Dynamite event. Kawajiri’s only loss since 2008, came against Shinya Aoki at DREAM 15, getting caught in a Achilles lock in just a little over a minute in the first round.
